ICYMI: TWiST Weekly Recap! 4/3-4/9
Hi everybody, hope you all had a great weekend. And Happy Easter to those who celebrate.
Here are the producer’s picks for the BEST TWiST moments from last week!
Producer’s Picks:
Nick:
I think last week’s most interesting segment came on E1713 when Jason broke down the charges against Frank founder Charlie Javice. (30:18)
The story of Javice flipping a list of ~4.2M fake users she acquired for ~$18K to JP Morgan in a $175M (!!) acquisition is almost too insane to be true.
Jason also starts to connect some similarities between recent tech frauds, including Elizabeth Holmes, Sam Bankman-Fried, and Charlie Javice (rich/influential parents, elite educations, high expectations…).
It’s an awesome segment, in a great episode, during a fantastic week! (E1713)
Jon:
We published some really interesting content last week, but episode 1712 stood out to me the most.
The focal point of the episode was Adam Neumann, Ben Horowitz, and Marc Andreessen’s comments on Saudi Arabia as a “startup country,” a topic that Jason explored in depth (2:44).
Jason also gave some interesting thoughts on the concept of “new cities” (13:01).
However, the cherry on top was the captivating interview with BioFluff CEO CEO Martin Stübler, who has developed plant-based fur products (30:44).
During the interview, they even discussed how BioFluff’s GTM strategy resembles what Tesla did in its early days! (E1712)
Brian:
Last week we had the pleasure of having Homebrew’s Satya Patel on E1715.
Satya is an incredibly thoughtful investor and shared a bunch of golden nuggets!
I thought the most interesting part of the interview was the discussion of flexible investing frameworks.
Jason and Satya revealed some rules that they abide by when deploying capital, BUT they also explained when and why they’d break their own rules.
Some frameworks included: never invest in solo founders (unless…), only invest in builders (unless…), entry price matters (until it doesn’t…)
It’s a fascinating interview, check it out! (E1715)
Episodes:
E1716: YC demo day valuation tensions, how VCs can find gems, Substack's performance & more
E1715: Satya Patel on the state of VC, flexible investing frameworks & converting to evergreen
E1714: Startup pitch competition: Jason invests $25K
E1713: Saudi Arabia discloses LP positions & SEC charges Frank founder with fraud
E1712: Trump, Saudi, & Adam Neumann’s obsession with cities + BioFluff CEO Martin Stübler
